A Car Coat vs. Pea Coat Fashion Statement

What makes a car coat different from other coats or outerwear, particularly a pea coat? The idea for this type of coat came about to protect the person against cold weather when driving an open car especially at night or at faster speed. It is an above the knee overcoat that is suitably designed for the limited leg room inside car seats. Although it’s above the knee feature is perfect for spring and fall, it actually does nothing much to keep the wearer’s knees from the chills against a truly freezing weather.

A car coat, nonetheless, can also be worn as a fashion statement. It often displays a stylish elegance that could wow onlookers as a motorist steps out of the car looking so dashing and fashionable in this above the knee overcoat. Many manufacturers make different designs of this outwear for use in different circumstances and not only for the car. Besides, being practical they make stylish addition to any wardrobe. A car coat is available in most department stores in a wide selection of designs, especially during the fall and winter seasons.

The main feature of a car coat that makes it different from other outwear is the A-line design with a flat front and mid-thigh length, making it useful to wear in a car since it gives the driver comfort while keeping him warm at the same time. The A-line design makes a slight flare giving more room for movement around the hips. The flat front reduces discomfort which is usually cause by bunching as with other types of outerwear while the mid-thigh length prevents the wearer from getting tousled while driving.

Another popular coat is the pea coat which originally designed for American and European sailors. Pea coats generally have broad lapels with double-breasted fronts. They are mostly made of navy colored heavy woolen material and adorned with large wooden or metal buttons and having vertically slashed pockets. The term “pea coat” is derived from the Dutch or West Frisian word pijjekker, with pij referring to the type of cloth used; which is a rough kind of twilled blue textile with basic design that has a nap on one side but usually comes with gold buttons and epaulettes. There is also a wide array of pea coats available in different colors and designs for those who prefer using this type of coat over the car coat.

While the affluent or fashion conscious gentleman could have more than one type of coat in their wardrobe, the rest are quite contented with a raincoat and liner, a day overcoat, or an evening coat that could be worn as the circumstance and occasion call for. Besides, even if you can afford to have all types of outerwear, you need to look good in it too. And everyone has their own styles and preferences. Whether it be a pea coat or a car coat or any type of coat, it all boils done to wearing what we are most comfortable in. Dressing for comfort, I think that’s how it should be and looking good as well.
